How to Create an Autumn Doorstep Display With Pumpkins

An autumn doorstep display can be as simple as three pumpkins beside the door or as layered as a full seasonal scene. The most effective displays use a few repeated colours, a mixture of heights and enough space for people to walk safely.

Choose a simple colour palette

Classic orange works beautifully with deep green foliage and natural wood. For a softer look, combine white, pale green and blue-grey pumpkins. Add burgundy foliage or dark lanterns for contrast.

Build the display in layers

  1. Start with the largest pumpkin or planter as the visual anchor.
  2. Add medium pumpkins at different heights.
  3. Fill smaller gaps with mini pumpkins, gourds or pinecones.
  4. Use foliage, a wreath or a garland to connect the display to the doorway.
  5. Add a sign or lantern as a finishing detail.

Use odd-numbered groups

Groups of three or five often feel more natural than matching pairs. Vary the shapes but repeat one or two colours so the arrangement still feels connected.

Keep the entrance safe

Leave the full width of the path and doorway clear. Keep decorations away from steps, handrails and places where visitors may trip. Use battery-operated lights rather than open flames, particularly near dry foliage.

Help fresh pumpkins last

Choose firm pumpkins without soft patches and avoid carrying them by the stalk. Keep them off permanently wet ground, protect them from hard frost and remove any fruit that begins to soften or leak.

Add a personal touch

Use a favourite seasonal sign, paint a small pumpkin with your house number or ask our in-house florist about a coordinating wreath. Natural variations are part of the charm—your display does not need to be perfectly symmetrical.
