Your selected wood
What this wood is like to burn
Birch
How it burns
Lights readily, produces a bright flame and gives useful heat relatively quickly.
A good choice for
Quick evening fires, getting a cold stove going and anyone who enjoys a lively visible flame.
Worth knowing
Birch generally burns more quickly than denser oak, so you may need to add logs more often.
Ash
How it burns
Offers steady heat and a dependable flame while remaining reasonably straightforward to establish.
A good choice for
Everyday stove and fireplace use when you want a balanced, versatile hardwood.
Worth knowing
Use dry kindling and allow good airflow when lighting, following the instructions for your appliance.
Oak
How it burns
A dense hardwood that generally burns slowly and provides sustained heat once the fire is established.
A good choice for
Longer fires and regular burners who prefer a slower-burning log.
Worth knowing
Oak can take longer to get going. Start with kindling or a quicker-lighting wood and add oak once there is a strong flame and hot ember bed.
Mixed hardwood
How it burns
Combines different hardwoods to provide a practical balance of flame, heat and burn time.
A good choice for
General everyday burning and customers who want a useful all-round firewood option.
Worth knowing
The species and proportions can vary between loads, so individual logs will not all burn in exactly the same way.
Namibian eucalyptus
How it burns
A dense hardwood capable of producing strong, sustained heat once it is burning well.
A good choice for
Established fires where a dense, longer-burning hardwood is preferred.
Worth knowing
Build a good fire with kindling first, then add eucalyptus once the appliance is hot. Always follow your stove or fireplace instructions.
